Plato Island (Plato, islote)
Plato Island is a small island lying 1 nmi east of Darwin Island in the Danger Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. The descriptive name Islote Plato (plate island) was given by the Argentine Ministry of Defense in 1977. The term island is appropriate and replaces "islote" (islet) in the name approved by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1993.

Situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean (also known as the Antarctic Ocean), it contains the geographic South Pole. Native species of animals include mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Where vegetation occurs, it is mostly in the form of lichen or moss.
